Food Composting at the Whidbey Island Fair

rePurpose Whidbey is partnering with the Whidbey Compost Collective to keep food waste out of the 400 mile journey that Island County’s trash takes to the Roosevelt Landfill. Did you know that nationally food waste makes up 21 percent of the average household garbage, and 50 percent of the average household waste is made up of organic waste that could be composted?

Our team is starting things off in a big way by collecting the mountains of funnel cake remnants, chili dog ends, and all manner of fair food leftovers at the Whidbey Island Fair. The Whidbey Compost Collective will be composting food onsite using the Bokashi method, July 24-27 from 1-4 p.m. This is a great step towards zero waste practices at the Fair. Come by to drop off your waste and check out the composting demonstration and educational display (Malone Building). Here’s an informative video about the process. If you’d like to volunteer to help compost fair food, you can sign up here. See you at the Zero Waste Station at the Whidbey Island Fair!
