Waste Audits & Education

Waste audits are an event where a dumpster or trash can is emptied and sorted with an appropriate methodology and documentation.

This process allows a household or organization to understand what materials are going into their landfill waste, and elucidate opportunities for immediate and long term actions to mitigate such waste.

In collaboration with Waste Wise of Island County and Whidbey Compost Collective, rePurpose provides free waste audits to local nonprofit organizations, institutions, and businesses. These waste audits involve a planning step, the waste audit itself, a formal report, and a debrief meeting.

Candidates for a waste audit are elucidated through conversation and relationship building, and a genuine curiosity and earnest commitment to be on the journey toward zero waste. Through this program, we have seen that the vast majority of materials going to the landfill simply do not need to do so.
